ENTRY LEVEL OFFICER
HIRING INCENTIVE and RELOCATION REIMBURSEMENT for ENTRY LEVEL OFFICERS
An applicant who qualifies as an Entry Level Officer shall be paid a hiring incentive of $3,500 – the first $875 to be paid on the first regular paycheck, with the remaining $2,625 to be paid on the regular paycheck following successful completion of the required probationary period. Compensation is subject to all applicable taxes, withholdings, and deductions, as required. The hiring incentive payment shall be contingent upon the written agreement by the Officer to remain employed with Des Moines for three years from date of hire.
Applicant’s who have graduated from a police academy will be processed through the same format as a lateral officer; however, they are not eligible for the lateral hiring incentive, they receive the entry level hiring incentive. Click here for Lateral Officer Information>>
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Age: Twenty-one years of age at time of application. |

Education: No college required; however, preference points are awarded based on the following types of degrees from a college accredited by either the Northwest Association of Schools & Colleges or by any other regional accredited association formally recognized by NASC:
AA or AA 5% added to final cumulative score BA or BS 8% added to final cumulative score MA, MS, or MPA 10% added to final cumulative score

Reserve Officer Certification Preference Points: Successful completion of a police reserve academy approved by the Civil Service Commission or a Des Moines approved reserve officer training academy receives 5% added to their final cumulative score.
Veterans Preference Points: Any applicant who meets the requirements of the Civil Service Commission of Des Moines & RCW 41.04.010 is eligible to receive 10% added to their final cumulative score. Veteran means any person who satisfies the definition in RCW 41.04.005.

Medical: Ability to pass medical, psychological and polygraph examinations.

|
WDL: Valid Washington State driver's license required at time of appointment. |
|
|
Other: U.S. Citizen, available for full-time employment, and a non-smoker.
|
|
|
Background: Applicants must pass all background screening conducted by the Department, including, but not limited to, drug history, driving record, credit history, criminal record, work history, reference check, polygraph examination, psychological examination, oral board interview, and Chief’s interview.
